I was invited recently to review ALICE IN WONDERLAND by DreamWeaver Musical Theatre. DreamWeaver Musical Theatre is based in Nampa but this production was at the Jewett Auditiorium at the College of Idaho. Rumor has it that they might be doing this production somewhere in Boise sometime soon, so keep your ears open!
DreamWeaver Musical Theatre wanted to do a production of Alice in Wonderland. They scoured the written plays and musicals but none of them felt right. So Annie Cerda (adaptation, music, and lyrics) ,Robert Morrow (music and lyrics), and Kevin MacLeod (music and lyrics) decided they would do their own research and write the version they wanted to do.
It is based on the story Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (with a few characters from Through the Looking Glass thrown in for good measure). The story of little Alice told to the Liddell children on the banks of a river one afternoon. Being the stories told to young children, it is very absurd. They kept the absurdity in tack as they wrote the play.
The costumes and sets, in keeping with the "for children" theme, are very bright and colorful. They did the right thing in choosing few set pieces, one so they could move from location to location, and two, so they could do them all right. I loved the set pieces that I saw on the stage. The doors, trees, garden walls were all so detailed, not to forget the mushrooms. The costumes were all colorful and showed off the characters. It was so fun to see the imagination and detail that went in to each costume. Such fun to see.
I love going and seeing theatre when everyone is enjoying themselves. This cast and crew gave the production 110% and it was obvious. If they get to put their show on in Boise I am sure it will be just as well produced and as fun as this one.
