On Tuesday nights, the Crescent Brewery opens it stage and hearts to an open mic format comedy show. On this Tuesday night I brought my son with me (all those who come must be 21 or older.)
The comic that opened the night was (and is the MC every Tuesday) Leif Skyving. Leif is a 20 plus year veteran of stand-up comedy and I can see how he has lasted so long. His jokes were funny and they came at you one after the other. It helped start the evening right and set the bar fairly high for those who were to follow.
The next comedian was TJ Wharry. He has been doing stand up for 8 months. That is the nice thing about the Crescent Brewery, they will let you do comedy as long as you want to; you don't have to have experience just the desire to do it. TJ still has a few rough edges but he is funny. I particular liked how he pointed out the difference between minorities in Boise and other major cities (he is from Detroit) in that the minorities in Idaho are Mormons, Democrats, and Californians; so white that even the minorities are white.
Pete Peterson does sit-down comedy. He requires a chair and sits during his delivery but it doesn't make him any less comedic. He shambles a bit to the stage but the audience indulges him and when he gets settled he delivers his first joke, "well, thank you for coming out- that's all the time I had". Pete has two passions, comedy and politics; although some would say that's only one.
Emmanuel Michael Christopher Vera the Fourth was the next comic up for the night. He wasn't my kind of humorist, but not everyone has to be. The audience was laughing and enjoyed him. I will admit I did chuckle a few times; he just wasn't the comedian for me.
The last comic of the night was Ryan Wingfield. I enjoyed his comedy and how he told us he was trying new bits. For instance how Vegans are the Southern Baptists of Vegetarians- Have you accepted Soy into your life? I giggle now thinking of some of his other bits. He knows how to build a joke layering laughter.
At the end of the night we were told that there was a pot of money (about $6.00 worth) and the audience would vote. The audience vote ended in a tie so there was a joke off! The two comedians would have three minutes each to tell a few more jokes and the audience would vote again. The winner of the night was Pete Peterson.
Crescent Brewery hosts a comedy night every Tuesday night. On October 25th they are hosting a "Best of..." Night starting at 8:00pm. They are located 1521 Front Street, Nampa, ID 83651
