Boise Contemporary Theater is thrilled to bring the best contemporary theater to Idaho Audiences. NEW THIS YEAR! In addition to the usual four full productions in our season we have expanded your opportunities for diverse and dynamic theater with two add-on productions. Season Tickets are available now to current members and will be offered to the general public on August 1st! This Early Bird Price allows maximum flexibility at a low price.
The 11|12 Season begins with the World Premiere of r e / f r a c t i o n. This is the first of our add-ons and it is a workshop production (think previews) of a new play written and performed by BCT associate artist Dwayne Blackaller. It's the story of a man named Dexter whose life is about to change. When Dexter's thumb goes numb, there's only one person he can talk to: Chelsea, his dental hygienist, played by ELise Langer. Play your part in the development of a brand new play exploring symmetry, the complexities of identity, and the dividing line that runs through every human heart.
Following r e / f r a c t i o n, we will present Shipwrecked! An Entertainment The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told By Himself) By Donald Margulies. The adventurous Louis de Rougemont invites you to hear his amazing tale of bravery, survival and celebrity that left nineteenth-century England spellbound. Dare to be whisked away by a story of the high seas, populated by exotic islanders, flying wombats, giant sea turtles and a monstrous man-eating octopus. Shipwrecked examines how far we're willing to blur the line between fact and fiction in order to leave our mark on the world. BCT's production of the Donald Margulies hit will layer Victorian theatrical styles with original music and more than a few surprises.
In November and December we are pleased to present an as yet untitled World Premiere play. Idaho native Samuel D. Hunter is on quite a roll. His play A Bright New Boise, which premiered in New York last fall, has been showered with accolades, including multiple Drama Desk nominations and an Obie Award. Norway received co-world premieres in Indianapolis and here at BCT in January and The Whale, which made a stop in the 2011 5X5 Reading Series, will get a full production at The Denver Center next winter. Join us this season for the world premiere of Hunter's newest work, commissioned specifically for the BCT stage. We don't know the title yet, but based on what we do know, you'll want to be here to experience the next story in an extraordinary body of work.
In 2011, we are proud to produce Gruesome Playground Injuries By Rajiv Joseph. We meet eight-year-olds Kayleen and Doug in the nurse's office of their elementary school. She has a stomachache and a penchant for "bad thoughts", he has a head injury from riding his bike off the roof of the school. The powerful connection between these two people will endure many twists and turns with the accompanying bumps and bruises over the next three decades of their lives. To tell their story Rajiv Joseph (Animals Out Of Paper) has crafted a dark and beautiful gem of a play about love, friendship, pain and healing.
After Gruesome Playground Injuries we present the World Premiere Off The Record by Lynn Allison in April. The hit of the 2011 5X5 Reading Series makes it's way to full production in 2012. The playwright, Lynn Allison, is known primarily for her work as an actor at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and of course here at BCT (Souvenir, Love-Lies-Bleeding, Eleemosynary). Her first effort as a writer, however, has proven to be charged with just as much excitement. In it a handsome, senior member of the United States Senate sits at a table in a cinderblock room across from the undercover cop he met in the airport bathroom. There is a tape recorder on the table and the rest is . . . not at all what you expect.
The 11|12 Season will be capped off by the second add-on production. New York Innovative Theatre Award-winning writer/performer Andrea Caban is back with her sold-out 2010 FringeNYC hit. Much of the play was written in Boise during BCT's production of The Pavilion in which Andrea starred as the all-knowing, all-powerful narrator. In Questions My Mother Can't Answer Andrea returns to mortality and herself on a mind-body-soul healing mission after being hit by a New York City cab. She interviews eight "women-of-a-certain-age" including a sexy Moroccan ballroom dancer, a donations-only prostitute, and her Aunt Shirley. Hoping to redefine "navigating life" and to interpret the ticks of her biological clock, Andrea looks to these women for guidance and finds inspiration, laughter and hope.
Season Tickets are now available to current BCT members with Season Ticket Sales will be open to the general public on August 1, 2011. For more information and to purchase tickets go to BCTheater.org.
