On October 13th, Alley Repertory Theater will open Bull in a China Shop by Bryna Turner, a vibrant comedy about two fierce women who blazed a new trail for women's education at the height of the suffrage movement. Directed by Jason Haskins and Liberty Leeds-Klautsch, Bull in a China Shop will run for two weekends with a Sunday matinee to close the run.
Inspired by the real letters of Mary Woolley and Jeanette Marks, Bull in a China Shop sprints through forty years at Mount Holyoke College, following the women has they navigate their ambitions, idealism, and feminine power. The triumphant debut of playwright Bryna Turner, this utterly un-stuffy history lesson reminds us that when we work to change the world, it changes us right back.
"Bull in a China Shop is an untold story that impacts any women who has ever taken a college class," said Alley Rep Artistic Director Buffie Main. "Mary and Jeannette fought for women to be educated as 'fully evolved humans.' They didn't just start a revolution, they were one. This play reminds us that the empowerment of women is not a history lesson, it is an active conversation that requires all our voices. And it's a smokin' hot love story."
Bull in a China Shop premiered at LCT3 in New York City in February 2017 and was chosen as a critic's pick by The New York Times. It is the first show in Alley Rep's 2017-2018 series, The Age of Women. To keep up with the series, theatergoers can follow Alley Rep on Facebook and Instagram. Tickets available at the door and www.alleyrep.org.
