The University of Montevallo Theatre Department is proud to present Lydia Diamonds Stick Fly, set to run from March 2 7, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. in the DiscoverShelby Theatre located in the Center for the Arts. The University of Montevallo Theatre Department is taking the threat of COVID-19 very seriously. In order to protect the safety of our patrons and performers, masks must be worn properly covering the mouth and nose and social distancing of six feet or more must be maintained. Seating location will be assigned upon ticket purchase and enforced during the production. Entrance into the theatre will be staggered according to seating location.Stick Fly premiered in March 2006 at the Congo Square Theatre Company in Chicago. On December 8, 2011, the play made its Broadway debut at the Cort Theatre and ran until February 26, 2012. Meeting the parents is one of the most complicated aspects of a new relationship. When the LeVay brothers each bring their respective girlfriends on a weekend getaway to meet their affluent parents, their mother is no where to be found and their father is behaving oddly. Relationships are strained as they argue about their differences in race, class, and cultural expectations; and, the question of familial responsibility is explored. The University of Montevallo Theatre Department has brought in guest director Chalethia Williams who currently serves as the Theater Program Coordinator at Miles College. Chalethia notes that, something that comes to mind watching and listening to this production is about how, in the midst of a Pandemic the challenge is real but I think that even though the masks and distance make the actions and gestures muffled and sterile, the message is clear and while an African American woman wrote it with 5 African American characters and 1 white female, it is very universal and crosses ALL races. There is a place for everyone to put yourself into virtually and find ways to make a change and do better. At this time tickets for the show have not gone on sale. Due to COVID-19 restricting the number of patrons that can attend each performance, a capacity limit for each performance is in place. It is recommended to check both social media and https://montevallotickets.universitytickets.com/user_pages/event_listings.asp regularly to be notified when ticket sales begin. The University of Montevallo Theatre Department is ultimately committed to the education and safety of their students, faculty, staff, and patrons. The production of Stick Fly has given students the opportunity to further their educations, even during such an unprecedented time.
