The Whole Backstage Theatre announces auditions for the Fall production of the audience favorite "Arsenic and Old Lace" by Joseph Kesselring., Auditions will be held at the Whole Backstage Theatre in Guntersville on Thursday and Friday, July 23 and 24 at 7:00 pm, and on Saturday, July 25 at 10:00 am.
This play of hilarity and homicide tells the story of the wacky Brewster family members whose love for charity has taken an alarmingly murderous turn. The cast of fourteen includes three women and eleven men, all adults. Half of the roles are major parts; a couple of the minor men's roles are in only one or two scenes. Those interested in auditioning should fit, or be able to play, characters' ages where indicated. "Arsenic and Old Lace" characters include:
Abby and Martha Brewster: Darling ladies in their sixties who poison elderly men.
Teddy Brewster: Teddy thinks he is Theodore Roosevelt.
Mortimer Brewster: Nephew of Abby and Martha.
Elaine Harper: An attractive girl and Mortimer's fiancée.
Jonathan Brewster: Nephew of Abby and Martha, Jonathan is a murderous psychopath who looks a bit like
Boris Karloff.
Dr. Einstein: Jonathan's surgeon assistant.
Officer O'Hara: A police officer and would-be playwright.
Lieutenant Rooney: A tough and dominating police lieutenant.
Mr. Witherspoon: The superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium. (50s to 60s)
Officer Brophy: A police officer.
Officer Klein: A police officer.
The Rev. Dr. Harper: Minister and father of Elaine (40s to 50s)
Mr. Gibbs: A man wishing to rent a room from the Brewster sisters (50s to 60s)
Those interested in auditioning may attend any or all auditions. Prepared material is not necessary. Audition perusal materials will be available at any of the libraries in Marshall County beginning July 7.
