The State Ballet Theatre of Russia Brings SWAN LAKE to Birmingham This Weekend

The State Ballet Theatre of Russia brings "Swan Lake" to Birmingham, Ala., for the first time tonight, Jan. 17 and Sunday, Jan. 18. Showings are at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. The company presents 50 of Russia's brightest ballet stars to bring the romantic tale to life.

"We are very happy to bring these performances of Swan Lake to Birmingham," says Anatoly Emelianov, Artistic Director of the Theatre. "This will be the first performance ever for The State Ballet Theatre of Russia in the state of Alabama and we are honored to perform in the historic Alabama Theatre."

Founded by legendary dancer and former Prima Ballerina of The Bolshoi Theatre Ballet, Maya Plissetskaya, The State Ballet Theatre of Russia, now under the direction of award-winning dancer and Moiseyev dance company soloist Nikolay Anokhin, presents one of the greatest classical ballets of all time.

The full-scale production based on Russian folklore and German legend follows a heroic young prince as he works to free the beautiful swan maiden from an evil spell. The ballet is in four acts with one intermission, with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
