Upon Their Shoulders: The Merrimack Story
October 15-18, 2009
Written and researched specially for Merrimack Hall by local playwright Ron Harris, this original play illustrates the rich history of Huntsville through the lives of real people who labored in area textile mills. Dramatizing real events that occurred at Merrimack Mills and the surrounding mill village where the hall is located today, the play traces the development of child labor laws, mandatory school laws, and the socioeconomic impact on our city today. In addition to five public performances, a shortened 40-minute version will be presented to all Huntsville City Schools fourth graders as part of their curriculum on Huntsville's history.
Letters Home
November 22, 2009 at 2 & 7:30 p.m.
In this multimedia production, Letters Home brings to life the current war in the Middle East with actual letters written by soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Photographs and video footage taken directly from soldiers' blogs reveal the humanity within the war as seen through the eyes of those fighting it. Without politicizing, the play presents a powerful and moving portrait of the soldier experience.
It's a Wonderful Life: The Live Radio Play
December 13, 2009 at 2 & 5 p.m.
The ON-AIR sign lights up, and you're in the studios of WBFR Radio on Christmas Eve, 1946. Exquisitely performed in the style of a live studio radio broadcast, this production lovingly honors America's collective gratitude to Frank Capra, Jimmy Steward, Donna Reed and everyone who originally brought the story to life on screen.
Route 66
January 29-31, 2010
Beginning in Chicago, Route 66 travels along the famed "Main Street of America" to the coast of California, with DJs and actual vintage radio advertisements building excitement along the way. Take a dollop of Grease, mix in some Pump Boys and the Dinettes, and add a generous dose of Forever Plaid, and you've got the pedal-to-the-metal, high-octane fun of Route 66.
Ruthie Foster in Concert
February 17, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
There's Southern blues in her groove, rock in her rhythm, and a blend of gospel redemption and jazz elegance in her singing. Ruthie Foster repeatedly testifies to her core message: Through the ups and downs, you must stay true to yourself.
Spencers Theatre of Illusion
February 19-20, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
Named the 2009 International Magicians of the Year by the International Magicians Society, their spectacular show is filled with never-before-seen illusions created exclusively for the Spencers. Watch people levitate, walk through walls, vanish and reappear. And be prepared to experience the magic yourself, because the Spencers want you to participate!
