The faithful gathered from all over central Alabama and points beyond to see and hear Birmingham's favorite son - Taylor Hicks. With his patent harmonica and dance moves that would be certain to put a smile on the face of "DWTS" judge Len Goodman, Taylor charmed the audience with his exuberance and soulful vocals. As an encore, he performed his new single "Seven Mile Breakdown" much to the delight of the "Soul Patrol" and the rest of the audience.

Did I forget to mention Taylor was performing as "Angel" not "Idol" in the national tour of "Grease"? Securing Hicks as "Teen Angel" was a stroke of genius by the Producers. It is estimated that he was worth another $150,000 in ticket sales. But the real "X" factor may be the long-term benefit to theatre in Birmingham as his presence certainly brought in new "blood' to the performances. Based on the audience's response and reaction to the production one would leave with a feeling of optimism that this may not be their last.

The lines formed early and the crowds waited patiently for their opportunity to have a photo-op with   Taylor. It reminded me that one of the most compelling reasons I enjoy live theatre is the accessibility of the actors regardless of their "star" status .
