Birmingham Children's Theatre has a knack for taking a classic story and giving it a new twist. ROBIN HOOD certainly holds true to that.. Written by Sina Skates, this rendition of ROBIN HOOD definitely has that twist. Something every girl should see, this particular play has Maid Marion, played by Magdalena Laws, as the hero. Robin Hood, played by Matthew Bass, is missing in action for the past three years while Marion is there in Nottingham fighting the good fight. Even in the end, Marion is portrayed as the strong one, with Robin happy to follow. I liked it- a lot.
As always, the set is beautiful with trees, rock walls and steps. The "stained glass" window transforms the forest into Friar Tuck's church. Tuck is played by BCT veteran Matthew Cale.
It was delightful to spend the afternoon at Birmingham Children's Theatre. When the lights went down for the performance to begin, you could feel the excitement and hear the gasp from the young crowd. And when the show was over, the kids cheered and cheered. How wonderful to be building a new generation of theatre goers!
I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more music. Only the Balladeer, played by Carrie Greenberg, got a chance to sing. But other than wanting more, I can't find fault with ROBIN HOOD. It was fun, beautiful, and showed good winning over evil. Oh, and the girl got the guy.
Be sure to take your kids to any and all productions at Birmingham Children's Theatre. For information on next season go to bct123.org.
