The address is 2410 Fifth Avenue South in downtown Birmingham. When you get there you will think that you have arrived in the wrong spot because you will be at Fifth Avenue Antiques. But you are just where you need to be for a night of interesting and imaginative theatre.
Theatre Downtown is upstairs at an antique store and if you are a theatre buff, you already know that good theatre can be performed anywhere, not just in a traditional "theatre" with a proscenium stage and an auditorium type set up.
With 10 seasons under its belt, Theatre Downtown keeps bringing a unique set of plays to the area. Innovative shows as well as original works make Theatre Downtown a great place to check out!
This season includes THE BIRDS from October 20-November 5, EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY EVER TOLD (And Then Some!) December 8-17 and then start the new year with Beth Henley's THE MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST January 26- February 11, 2017 directed by Karen Marie Black (creator of the web series "Bug Spoon".)
Opening night always includes a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception, the second Thursday is Hobo Night where you pay what you can and if you follow TD on Facebook you might see the "super-secret" password to receive a discount on the first Friday night.
Theatre Downtown has become one of my favorite venues, with comfortable seating, welcoming people and always something original and fun to look forward to.
Something remarkable is often happening at Theatre Downtown and while some of their shows are not for everyone, all of their shows are done with creativity and an obvious love of theatre.
Tickets are $18 for adults ($25 for musicals) and $12 for students ($20 for musicals.) For more information or to purchase tickets go to www.theatredowntown.org or call 205-565-8838.
