Even now, thirty years after its creation, the mythical Rosas danst Rosas continues to surprise us with its modernity and move us with the determined grace of its young performers. Written in 1983 for the four founding members of the Rosas troupe, this dynamic and rhythmical piece combines the rigour of repetitive movement with the kind of youthful audacity that throws itself into the rhythm of the music and the energy of the dance. Abstract and everyday movements are wedded and translate the shy transformation of a young girl into a woman, a mix of seduction, refusal, unconcern and seriousness, but the choreography is always the underlying structure for the flowering of the emotions. This subtle balance between abstraction and emotion is at the heart of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s work and is magnificently illustrated in this early example of beauty that is methodical yet free.
