Philosopher and writer – writer and philosopher – Friedrich Nietzsche developed a decisive original school of thought in the second half of the 19th century with The Birth of Tragedy which led to the emergence of a daring new approach to Greek tragedies. He was also the brainchild of an unequalled poetic language that translates his love of music. Based on several extracts from his texts, Pascal Dusapin, author of Passion, has created a lieder cycle for the astonishing vocalist and actor Georg Nigl who, in his performance of this work, metamorphosizes into a profoundly moving and lone traveller, a dancer suspended by a rope over the abyss as he crosses the space that separates reason from madness. This portrayal of Nietzsche is directed by the composer whose imagery and music are subtlety intertwined.
