Thanks to passionate experts of baroque like Andrea Marcon, the last decades we have rediscovered many previously unknown works by the prolific Antonio Vivaldi, including sacred songs as well as twenty-odd operas which contain some marvellous arias. The lyrical repertoire of the Venetian composer perfectly suits Marie-Nicole Lemieux, whose fiery temperament is exceeded only by her vocal richness and skill. As well as her magnificent performances of Nisi Dominus and Stabat Mater, this Canadian contralto gave a concert performance of the title role in Griselda and recently delivered a memorable stage version of Orlando furioso, lending her full and deep timbre to the ‘male’ role of the knight, Orlando. There can be no doubt that her Vivaldi recital with the Venice Baroque Orchestra will be full of lively surprises.
