Ludovic Morlot at La Monnaie

A very interesting and eclectic programme is being offered by Ludovic Morlot. In fact he is bringing together classical, neo-classical and modern works all in the space of one evening! Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D major, rediscovered in the middle of the 20th century, shows him to be the master of classicism and will certainly test its performers to the limit and culminate in a striking finale. Preoccupied with the musical forms of the past, Stravinsky, towards the end of the 1910s, created a neo-classical period of which Pulcinella, a composition commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for his Russian Ballet Company, was the inaugural piece. He alludes to the work of Pergolesi, as well as that of other 18th century Italian composers, and yet retains his own original style of writing. Anton Webern, with his symphony for chamber orchestra, opens a window onto a poetic, original world of sound which invites us, with the importance he attaches to silences, to rediscover the intrinsic beauty of sound.
