New choreographic works by Sasha Waltz invariably surprise us with their grouping, the depth of their subjects and styles, and their stunning aesthetics. Her next new work will be created in collaboration with the Dutch designer Iris van Herpen – whose talents are also on display at La Monnaie this season in The Miraculous Mandarin and Bluebeard’s Castle. Both the choreographer and the fashion designer have a particular interest in dialogue with other art forms, and are drawn to interdisciplinary research and certain scientific fields. Iris van Herpen, in particular, combines refined craft techniques with advanced digital technology in pieces that owe much to both fashion and sculpture. This pair of highly-regarded artists is creating a new work for us in which dance, fashion, and light are melded together.
