Beethoven and Mendelssohn: two major German composers who combine classicism and romanticism marvellously. Beethoven embodies the turning point between the two styles, while Mendelssohn – rooted in romanticism"– still draws much inspiration from the classical period. Beethoven’s shortest symphony – Symphony No. 8 – is a magnificent tribute to the genre’s model and his master, Joseph Haydn. The Trumpet Overture served as Mendelssohn’s preliminary study for the magnificent Midsummer Night’s Dream overture, which he composed in 1826. Seventeen years later, he added theatre music to it, still inspired by Shakespeare’s play. After conducting Mozart’s Idomeneo and Le Nozze di Figaro, Jérémie Rhorer returns to La Monnaie for a prestigious concert from this dazzling repertoire.
