Elena’s Aria – created in 1984 – represented a crucial stage in the young Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s career at the time. Breaking with the aesthetic force of Fase and Rosas danst Rosas with a structure of repetitive music, the interaction between the dancers has been replaced by the solitary wanderings of five women who have given themselves over to the melancholy of love, seeking the path of their movements based on everyday gestures. There is no music, apart from a few opera arias. The performance is remarkable due to its theatricality, emotional power and daring nature, which is so characteristic of the choreographer’s creative process. She has since rewritten Elena’s Aria and gives us her latest version with her characteristic radicalism.
