'Strength has triumphed, rewarding beauty and wisdom with an everlasting crown!' Culminating in praise of those virtues, Die Zauberflote has since become an emblem of European culture. Following classic productions for La Monnaie of Parsifal and Orphee et Eurydice, director Romeo Castellucci invites us to delve into the heart of the Enlightenment. He offers us an original, challenging performance, in which the sun - an allegory of the virtues - heralds a utopia that is both beneficial and blinding. At his side, the conductor Antonello Manacorda returns to us, following his Lucio Silla, in which a young Mozart resolutely faced the future. 'Masterpieces reveal new meanings when we ask different questions of them' (Jean Starobinski). The duo of Castellucci and Manacorda will undoubtedly reveal to us some of the secrets of this much-loved masterpiece.
