‘I want to be like the nightingale and sing until I die,’ Robert Schumann declared to Clara Wieck in the year of their marriage and of the composition of the song cycle Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love). Based on Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo, Schumann’s song cycle is imbued with this song of love and death, in much the same way as Schubert’s equally famous Sch.ne Müllerin and Winterreise. As can be seen from his list of recordings, Christoph Prégardien is a well-regarded lied specialist. In his first recital at La Monnaie, he took the Monnaie audience on a personal Winterreise (Winter Journey). The German tenor, who performed Hugo Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch on our stage in 2013, invites you to join him in an intensly emotional exploration of masterpieces of the repertoire in a programme that combines Schubert and Dichterliebe.
