For her new recital at La Monnaie, Anna Caterina Antonacci is performing a programme of baroque music chosen to suit and show off her tragic heroine temperament and her expressive virtuosity. She has gone back to the origins of opera – beginning with the first master of the form, Monteverdi – to exhibit her great skill at recitar cantando and the lamento con affetti in songs which reveal the internal battles of the heart and soul. Arianne’s sorrow at being abandoned speaks to the heartbreaking farewell of the exiled queen, Octavia, whereas the Combattimento immerses us in the exciting story of the warrior lovers, Tancredi and Clorinda. Unbeaten, the desire for love turns towards madness, and is poured out in tears, before burning, a last time, on the lips of the dying Dido.
The Accademia degli Astrusi – conducted by Federico Ferri – will accompany these solo voice masterpieces and give a fiery reply with some original instrumental pieces.
