Desingel presents The Minister's Black Veil March 30 - April 2. This show is directed by Romeo Castellucci and features the Societas Raffaello Sanzio company. Tickets range from 25 to 36 Euros.
"'I know more than a thousand painters in the past who spent half their lives reproducing the almost invisible grimace of sorrow on Jesus' lips.' Since 'Giulio Cesare' (1997) the Italian director of surprising but brilliantly well-founded visual theatre has been working on the paradoxes and contradictions of religion. This theme is also at the core of his latest production. In 'J' Romeo Castellucci focuses on Jesus' face. His inspiration is Renaissance painting - and the name of his company - of course - is Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. Frontal portraits of Jesus looking you questioningly in the eye. Ecce homo. Castellucci's explores what happens when you place certain human reactions 'in Jesus' light'. 'J' is not about devotion, is not socially critical and is not out to provoke. The performance contains fourteenth- and fifteenth-century sacred chants in which Jesus' name is repeated again and again like a mantra. Romeo Castellucci does not seek out the mystical but another way of thinking about loneliness and how religion can tear you apart and divide people."
