Divine destruction and evil madness.
Last season Jan Decorte, Sigrid Vinks and the actors of Compagnie Marius created the wonderful Wintervögelchen.
This vintage Decorte adaptation of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale was a poetic, comic fairytale that was touching in its naivety, but whose underlying barbs made it impossible to shake off.
When Jan Decorte rewrites a classical work the resulting texts are superb: in his ‘childlike' language and clear poetic images he manages to capture the very heart of these great masterpieces. They become ‘child's play', but it's a ‘cruel child's play'.
Decorte had earlier adapted Euripides to make «Betonliebe + Fleischkrieg» Medeia and now he is working on The Bacchae. What interests Decorte is the element of extreme horror in the story and the contrast between the reason of Pentheus, king of Thebes, and the passion in the character of Dionysus, god of ecstasy, wine and theatre. When these opposing forces meet, all that is left is divine destruction and evil madness.
Bakchai is a new step in Jan Decorte's theatre oeuvre, in his search for radical love, beauty and authenticity. It plays from January 7 to 9.
