The Belgium National Orchestra presents AN INFINITE DESIRE on Friday, Oct. 19.
Up there, far from the terrestrial reality, Aeriality (2010/11) invites us to slip into the rarefied air. The work of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir explores the border between symphonic music and sound art. After sneaking through the clouds, we arrive at a golden ballroom of the Austrian Imperial Court. After the horrors of the First World War, Ravel reworked Vienna, a pre-war composition first conceived as a tribute to the city and king of the Strauss waltz, and renamed it La Valse (1920). Behind the lightness of the dance steps are hidden a macabre atmosphere and a sharp criticism of the decadence of the bourgeoisie seeking refuge in worldly entertainment.
