Just in time to celebrate spring, Riverside Center for the Performing Arts presents They’re Playing Our Song from Wednesday, April 3 through Sunday, May 12, 2024. With the book by Neil Simon, music by Marvin Hamlisch, and lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, this enchanting musical shines the spotlight on the quirky yet endearing relationship between two talented songwriters. Their creative collaboration takes center stage, weaving a tale of romance, humor, and self-discovery that is inspired by Hamlisch and Sagers’ own relationship. Memorable songs include, “They’re Playing My Song”, “If He Really Knew Me”, “Just for Tonight”, and “I Still Believe in Love.”
Playing the role of the wisecracking composer with a penchant for witty tunes, Vernon Gersch, is Riverside’s very own Associate Producing Artistic Director & Music Supervisor, Carson Eubank. He was last seen on our stage in 2022 as Cosme McMoon in Souvenir. Starring alongside Carson as Sonia Walsk, an offbeat lyricist who dances to her own rhythm, is Ashlee Waldbauer. Ashlee debuted on our stage in 2022 as Molly in Ghost the Musical and returned in 2023 as the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The rest of the cast includes an ensemble that, through smooth harmonies and groovy choreography, embodies the inner thoughts of the two collaborators. The Voices of Vernon Gersch will be played by Kevin Cleary, Chris Florio, and Michael Goltry. The Voices of Sonia Walsk will be played by Jessica Barraclough, Barbara Breen, and Megan Hasse (Sonia Understudy), The two swings are Colleen Kleveno and Jarrett Bloom (Vernon understudy.)
The creative team is led by Riverside Center for the Performing Arts’ Producing Artistic Director Patrick A’Hearn, with Music Director David Landrum, Choreographer Stephanie Wood, and Production Stage Manager Abby Palese. Set Design by Frank Foster, Lighting/Projection Design by Weston Corey. Sound Design by Cheyenne Tenda. Costume Designer is Erin Welsh, and Properties Master is Claire Flores.
