Twelfth Night, or What You Will, is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 16011602 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season (January 5).The play centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as a young man named Cesario) falls in love with the Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with Countess Olivia. Upon meeting the disguised Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her, thinking she is a man.The main subplot involves Malvolio, Steward to Countess Olivia, who disdains the antics of Sir Toby Belch and his companions, and wishes to "marry up" with Olivia. Sir Toby, Sir Andrew Aguecheek and Maria, Olivia's maid, take their revenge on Malvolio by tricking him into believing that Olivia not only loves him but wants to see him dressed and acting in a certain comic way, which he does. "Some are born great; some achieve greatness; some have greatness THRUST upon them!"Meanwhile, Viola's twin brother Sebastian, mistaken for Cesario, is romanced by Countess Olivia ... and challenged by others ...
