Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade. These are just a few of the characters from legendary authors Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, and Dashiell Hammett that made the detective one of the most popular figures in our entertainment culture today. These early sleuths opened the door and led the way for modern mysteries.
From Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels to the various incarnations of Law & Order and CSI on television, mysteries are as popular as ever. Even one of the most beloved board games of all times, Clue, is based on solving a murder. And let's not forget Sherlock Holmes' 21st Century resurgence with the popular CBS television series Elementary and the BBC's Sherlock. It is no exaggeration to say people love a good who dunnit?
That is never more evident than when Way Off Broadway announces a special interactive mystery event at the theatre. In addition to its regular Mainstage and Children's Theatre seasons, The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, has become the home of the Marquee Mystery Series. Once or twice a year, Way Off Broadway adds an interactive murder mystery event to the calendar in which the audience gets involved and helps solve the case. In recent years, the mysteries have been set to the backdrop of a political campaign, competitive cooking show, a drag night club, and a talent contest, much like American Idol. No subject is safe when it comes to WOB's mystery events.
Way Off Broadway's next interactive mystery takes on a subject that everyone can agree can be complicated and sometimes deadly . . . family! The Family Fortune Fia$co is the theatre's second mystery event of the year and will be presented on August 9th and 10th.
There is nothing like a family reunion. And it is once again time for the Halliwell Family to gather together to celebrate and catch up on the year's events. But as anyone can tell you, when families get together, tensions can quickly rise and things can get out of hand. There is no doubt that sparks are going to fly at this year's reunion because Aunt Cassandra, the family's matriarch, has a big announcement . . . she is going to change her will. With the clock ticking, Cassandra's zany relatives try everything they can to keep themselves from losing their share of the family's vast fortune. Some might even be willing to kill to keep their inheritance.
"It is so much fun to watch the audience get so into the show," says Justin M. Kiska, Way Off Broadway's President & Managing Director and the person behind all of the theatre's mysteries. "Some people take it so seriously, writing down notes about every little thing they see and hear. Everyone thinks they can be the next Sherlock Holmes."
The Family Fortune Fia$co will have a limited two performance run August 9th & 10th at The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre. Door will open each evening at 6:30 p.m. for dinner. Tickets are $40 per person and may be purchased by calling the Box Office at (301) 662-6600.
