One of the most unique entertainment venues in the area, combining fine dining with first-class live theatrical performances, the Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre is ready to unveil its 2010 Season. After the success of its 15th Anniversary Season in 2009, with a line-up that included a regional theatre premiere production of the musical comedy The Wedding Singer, Andrew Lloyd Webber's mega-sensation Cats, and the area premiere of Mel Brook's The Producers, WOB is setting its sights on fun and laughs for the 2010 Season.
Each year the theatre's management team puts together a long list of possible productions for the upcoming season. The initial list can range anywhere from fifteen to twenty different shows. In the end, only a handful are selected to be produced.
"We love being able to bring new shows to Frederick for the first time, "says Bill Kiska, Way Off Broadway's Executive Producer and CEO. "It's always difficult coming up with just the right shows. We like to make sure there is a little something for everyone when they come to Way Off Broadway."
As with 2009, Way Off Broadway is proud to include several area premieres in its 2010 Season. Opening the season with a bang is THE FULL MONTY running January 29 - March 27. For the spring, the music of Elvis will be rocking the house when ALL SHOOK UP is on stage April 9 - June 5. Dan Goggin's beloved Little Sisters of Hoboken return for the summer run of NUNSENSE A-MEN! June 18 - August 29. A pair of mismatched con men find their way to Frederick in the fall for the area premiere of the musical comedy DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, running September 10 - November 7. And rounding out the season is the original holiday production CHRISTMAS FOLLIES: THE NORTH POLE REVUE November 19, 2010 - January 8, 2011.
THE FULL MONTY
January 29 - March 27, 2010
Six unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, New York are miserable. They have no cash and no prospects. Meanwhile, they catch their wives and other women going crazy over male strippers during their "Girls' Night Out." The six men then set out to make some quick cash showing off their 'real man' bodies by becoming a team of male strippers. As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, and anxieties, they find strength as a group and overcome their inner demons. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun. The Full Monty has been an instant audience favorite at every theatre where it has appeared. Now, for the first time, it comes to Frederick.
ALL SHOOK UP
April 9 - June 5, 2010
Shakespeare meets James Dean, all set to the music of Elvis Presley in this exuberant jukebox musical! In 1955, a mysterious motorcycling stranger comes to a square town in a square state and changes it and the lives of everyone he meets forever. This loopy tale of mismatched lovers in a Midwest burg incorporates classics that range from sweet romantic ballads like "Love Me Tender" to the rollicking "Devil in Disguise." Not to mention other hits like "Jailhouse Rock," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "Don't be Cruel." Driven by sidesplitting tongue-in-cheek humor, The King's chart-toppers, and a tinge of genuine heart, All Shook Up is destined to become a WOB classic. The story is all new - the hits are all Elvis!
NUNSENSE A-MEN!
June 18 - August 29, 2010
Dan Goggin's Nunsense series is one of the most popular and funny sets of shows ever, and have become sensations around the world and right here in Frederick. Nunsense and Nunsense 2: The Second Coming were huge hits at WOB. After a short hiatus, it's time for the Little Sisters of Hoboken to return to the theatre. However, this time, there's a twist. A big one! The nuns are all played by men! That's right. Male performers don the nuns' habits and bring you the original storyline in this hilarious 'rethought' version. Nunsense A-Men! can best be described as "Mrs. Doubtfire enters the Convent." It's too funny to miss!
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
September 10 - November 7, 2010
Based on the popular 1988 film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. The other, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. At first Lawrence takes Freddy under his wing, but when the two end up going head-to-head to try and be the first to take American soap queen Christine Colgate for $50,000, their plotting and scheming leads to twists, turns, laughs, and a surprise ending.
