The Strand Theater invites you to its second annual Open House! The theme of this year's Open House is Gypsy Gala. For one magical day, the Strand will be transformed into a gypsy haven, where patrons will experience tarot readings, spells, and a little magic.
The Strand is proud to be the only theater in Baltimore whose mission is to promote women artists, performers, and playwrights. In one year, the Strand has produced four new plays by unpublished playwrights, fostered three up and coming women directors, and sought plays that give substantial roles to women.
The Gypsy Gala festivities begin at 4pm on Sunday, May 31st. Please come and enjoy free refreshments, bid in the silent auction, and enjoy performances by drag performer Marty Manhattan, solo performer Rahne Alexander, fire-eater Kate Guntermann, and musician Rave BLACK. For those who prefer to be part of the act, BIG Improv will be hosting an interactive workshop on improvisation. "This event culminates the hard work of so many dedicated individuals, it is incredible to think of how much we've accomplished in just one year" beams Board President Alison Buckley, "We cannot be more excited to give our patrons, donors, and community a night to remember."
The Gypsy Gala will also mark the first chance for patrons to purchase tickets to the Strand's 2009-2010 season. "Unveiling the new season will be the highlight of the event for me, we have tirelessly sought out a mix of published and unpublished plays never before seen in Baltimore" elates Artistic Director, Jayme Kilburn.
The Gypsy Gala features donated refreshments from Planet Produce, Puffs and Pastries, Atwaters, the Station North Arts Café, Joe Squared, the Bohemian Cafe, and the Club Charles. Patrons will also be able to bid on donated items from One Spa, Philip Laubner Photographic Services, Ken Stanek Photography, Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Daedalus Books & Music, Geppi's Entertainment Museum, New System Bakery, PJ's Pub on Charles Street, Trichromatic Images, Washworks Car Wash, Wolly Mammoth, Centerstage, Spotlighters, and Single Carrot.
Doors open for the Gypsy Gala at 4pm, proceeded by the Strand's 2009-2010 season announcement. BIG Improv takes the stage at 5:30PM. Performances by Marty Manhattan, Rahne Alexander, and Kate Guntermann begin at 7PM. Music by Raven BLACK will be featured in the back courtyard from 6pm-7pm. Silent auction items will be available for bidding throughout the evening.
