Since the Strand cares so deeply about the safety of its patrons and cast / crew members we are canceling this weekend's performances of The Lacy Project (Feb 5 and 6). But don't worry! You still have plenty of chances to see this stylish, groundbreaking show.
The Lacy Project by ALena Smith was set to run February 5-27, 2010. The Strand Theater is committed to producing plays by obscure, unknown, and unpublished playwrights. This season, obscurity comes in the form of two living dolls and oNe Young woman trapped in the shadow of her mother's photographic images in The Lacy Project by playwright ALena Smith. The Lacy Project was selected from a group of thirty new plays submitted to the Strand for possible production. "I was attracted to The Lacy Project immediately," beams Artistic Director, Jayme Kilburn. "It is not always easy to find a play that offers five strong roles for women, and ALena Smith writes each character with such purpose."
About The Lacy Project
Her mother's photographs turned Lacy into an icon of childhood innocence and beauty. Now, on the night of her 22nd birthday, Lacy has to navigate between image and reality, sex and friendship, self-indulgence and responsibility. This wild tragicomedy presents a portrait of a young woman held captive by her own childhood, and a vivid picture of a generation unable to grow up. Playwright, ALena Smith, graduated with an MFA from Yale School of Drama in 2006 where she received the ASCAP Cole Porter Prize in Playwriting.
Living Dolls Exhibit
To accompany The Lacy Project, the Strand is featuring the work of several local artists in the appropriately titled exhibit, Living Dolls. Come early to see work by Lauren Barnhart, Pat Bourque, Davida Gypsy Breier, Ashleigh Haddad, Jason Hurley, Philip Laubner, Mary Podles Mullaj and Alban Mullaj, Rachel Padding, and Amanda E. Salisbury.
