The Beth Tfiloh Community Theater will present the comedy Urinetown: the Musical on August 19 at 2:00 pm and August 21, & 22 at 7:00 pm in the H. Morton Rosen Arts Center. The H. Morton Rosen Arts Center is located at 3300 Old Court Road in Pikesville, Maryland.
“There's so much talent here that I hadn't yet been exposed to doing theater at other Baltimore venues,” says BTCT regularCheryl J. Campo, who has been lighting up rehearsals with her powerful voice and bright personality. Cappie-award winning performer and Beth Tfiloh Dahan High School alum Ellie Goldenberg has been a staple of the BTCT since the beginning. But even for this Israel-bound star, the BTCT hosts a uniquely warm and often-times hilarious backstage experience: “Everyone's energy and sense of humor make for an entertaining production process that always promises a fabulous show!”
Urinetown will feature a full set, designed and created by local artists. “Transforming a plain stage into something mystical and exotic is one of the most magical things,” says Yaki Weingarten, a Beth Tfiloh senior, company member, and scenic artist.
Nominated for nine Tony awards and winner of three (including Best Original Score), Urinetown is a satirical tale of greed, love, and revolution that takes the audience on an outrageous adventure through a world where water is worth its weight in gold. Based on the book by Greg Kotis and featuring music by Mark Hollmann,Urinetown parodies just about everything... including musical theater! The show’s exciting premise, combined with classic song and dance numbers like “Run, Freedom, Run,” had the New York Times describing it as “simply the most gripping and galvanizing theater experience.” Listed as the 13th funniest musical ever by Entertainment Weekly, Urinetown has kept audiences in stitches since its debut in 2001. And still, at the heart of Urinetown lies a poignant message, delivered through a touching romance.
