Terry Baum, from Lilith Theater of San Francisco, brings her one-woman show, Hick: A Love Story - the Romance of Lorena Hickok and Eleanor Roosevelt, to Theatre Project, 45 West Preston Street, Baltimore, for two weeks of performances, February 25 - March 6.
Eleanor Roosevelt (ER) wrote 2336 letters to Lorena Hickok (Hick), the most famous woman journalist of her day. These letters were discovered in 1978, when a researcher opened 18 boxes willed to the FDR Library by Lorena Hickok. The letters document a passionate lesbian relationship between Hick and ER in the early years of their friendship - and a deep connection that last ER's lifetime. The romance between the patrician First Lady and the charming, hard-living butch reporter changed both their lives.
Solo performer Terry Baum brings Hick to life - as the renowned journalist, important chronicler of the Great Depression, and lover and "First Friend" of First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt.
Terry Baum has been creating theater in San Francisco since she founded Lilith, the Women's Theater Collective, in 1974. As a solo performer of her own work, she has toured the U.S., Canada, Europe and Israel.
Terry has had four plays published and produced all over the world. Her work has been translated into French, Dutch, and Swedish. An Italian version of Dos Lesbos offended the Pope during the World Pride 2000 celebration in Rome.
