Red Branch Theatre Company's Executive Producer Stephanie Williams and Managing Director Tiffany Underwood Holmes unveiled the titles for the 2014 season this past weekend at the company's opening of Tick, tick... BOOM! Starting the season off with a bang on St. Patrick's Day (March 17, 2014), renowned American musical theatre composer Jason Robert Brown will present a benefit cabaret entitled "I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You." Howard County restaurant Iron Bridge Wine Company will cater the affair with Irish-themed favorites. All proceeds will benefit Red Branch Theatre Company's 2014 operating budget. This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event given the opportunity to see this prominent composer in a rare concert appearance in the theatre's intimate space.
Following the season opening cabaret, Red Branch Theatre Company will present two mainstage musicals in repertory under the designation of "The Love/Loss Cycle." The Last Five Years and john & jen are both two-person musicals tackling the intricacies of love and loss through relationships with varying dynamics. The Last Five Years chronicles a five-year relationship between Cathy Hiatt and Jamie Wellerstein through a series of musical soliloquies. Cathy's perspective is described in reverse chronological order while Jamie's perspective is portrayed in traditional chronological order. Meanwhile, john & jen wrestles with the love and loss of first a brother, followed by a son.
Fall 2014 will bring Red Branch Company Members back to the stage with the music of Stephen Sondheim in a limited run of You're Gonna Love Tomorrow. The authorized musical revue brings together some of the composer's most popular songs alongside more obscure selections from his expansive catalogue. Triumph of Love premiered at Maryland's state theatre, Center Stage, in 1993 when author James Magruder was on staff as Resident Dramaturg. It makes its way back to Maryland at Red Branch Theatre Company in October 2014. The musical adaptation of the classic French play by the same name has comedy, capers, and antics presented in a clever fasion.
A Year With Frog and Toad will close the season in December. The beloved characters created by Arnold Lobel come magically to life in A Year with Frog and Toad. The jazzy and upbeat score will be a hit for the whole family, ensuring Red Branch Theatre Company the ability to fulfill its mission of fostering a life-long love of theatre in audiences.
All of the titles in Red Branch's 2014 season are produced by special arrangement with permission from Musical Theatre International (MTI).
