Midtown librarians Charlotte and Lillian find their work world threatened when an imposing new manager takes over the branch.

This year's Friends and Neighbors Festival includes all works by women. The FN Fest has one purpose: to put on great works by local playwrights at an affordable price. We want to cultivate an audience willing to take the financial risk on a new piece of work. We want playwrights to be able to showcase their new works. Thus (a very theatrical word) we created the Friends and Neighbors Festival! The festival is sponsored in part by the Maryland State Arts Council. They took a risk on new voices. Why don't you??!

Ronda Cooperstein is a playwright living in Baltimore with two dogs, two cats, two sons, and one father. Several of her plays have been selected for production, and others have received staged readings. Her play, Juanita Bloom, won the Baltimore Playwrights Festival best play and best production awards in the year 2000. She is grateful to all of the local theaters that have given her the opportunity to share her work, and to the many people who have showed interest in her stories.

PLAYWRIGHTS NOTE: Librarians, the salt of our civilization, are rarely acknowledged and often misunderstood. How may citizens take time to consider the whirlwind of work librarians do each day, much of it in backrooms and behind closed doors? Do people realize that librarians are far more than a pit stop on the way to a bookshelf or computer station? Do parents understand that the librarian telling the story to their small child really IS a fairy godmother (or godfather)? The Ladies of Libraryland is one playwright's tribute to the librarians of the world. She also happens to be a librarian.
The Strand Theater is a community theater dedicated to providing opportunities for women artists, writers, designers and directors. With a focus on producing original works, the Strand hopes to foster a love of theater for a new generation of patrons. www.strandtheatercompany.org.
