The Maryland Humanities Council and the Strand Theater Company present Spooky Campfire Folklore Thursday, October 28 at 6:45pm. Join us, Master Storyteller Bill Grimmette, and Fire Artist Kate Guntermann, for a campy evening of story telling around a campfire.

Want ‘smore fun? The evening begins with a marshmallow reception in the Strand Theater Courtyard. After indulging in semi-sweet bliss, patrons will be invited to gather around a non-functional and highly imagined fire pit. Bill Grimmette summons the spirits from folklorists, story tellers, and urban legends past to give the audience a lesson in the art and tradition of storytelling that transcends what you thought you knew about where that guy got that hook and why he is so angry about it.

After receiving the most exciting history lesson that a person could hope for, audience members will join their group around the glow of a cinderless fire to begin creating folklore of their own. As group members take turns adding bits and pieces to the story, you will create your story that will find its place among the most frightening urban legends retold. After thirty minutes of chilling chatter, you and your group will be ready to present your story in abbreviated glory to your fellow sadists.

And if that is not enough, afterwards you get to gaze and admire as Madam Guntermann imbibes a fiery elixir that could intoxicate Satan himself. As you leave the Strand, you will be given a program to commemorate your time in the most enchanted theater on earth. The becharmed scripture will illuminate the reader with a knowledge of all that is folklore. A warning to the reader: do not read backwards, never read it backwards.

The Strand Theater dedicates itself to experimenting with new theater techniques. Our productions bear relevance in today's world. We seek to reflect the new balance of power in our current society with more roles for women as actors, playwrights, directors and designers.
