In December, Single Carrot Theatre will open The Other Shore, a truly unique theatrical journey by China's only Nobel Prize Winner for literature, Gao Xingjian. THE OTHER SHORE will run December 8th, 2010 - January 16th, 2011 at Single Carrot Theatre, 120 W. North Ave (at Load of Fun), Baltimore, MD 21201. For more information, call (443) 844-9253.
Audiences have been enraptured by Gao's work for decades, both in his native China and abroad. He's known as a pioneer of absurdist drama in China, held in esteem with the likes of Beckett and Ionesco. Despite respect and reverence from the artistic community, the taboo nature of his pieces and the departure from traditional theatre proved too controversial for a country in the throws of its own tumult. Much of Gao's work has been deeply criticized and was eventually banned by the Chinese government.
The Other Shore is a play unlike any other. The audience follows the journey of characters as they struggle to reach their destination and the narrative is poetic and interpretive. Each audience will see a different production, as actors explore new characters with each performance.
In one of his later works, Nocturnal Wanderer, Gao writes, "Walk where your heart leads you, there are no restrictions and no burdens." Exploring the lack of restrictions and burdens, and what happens after personal limits are pushed to extreme is a common theme among Gao's work and Baltimore seems the perfect environment to explore such a theme.
"The Other Shore, and this production at Single Carrot, are explorations", says director J. Buck Jabaily. Explorations of the space, the other actors and the poetic nature of the human condition, are all part of Single Carrot Theatre's upcoming production. It's a production both experimental and energetic, and a spectacular departure from the normal theatrical experience.
