Chicago playwright Douglas Post has made murder an art through his many plays, screenplays and teleplays. With its premiere in 1991, Earth and Sky has stood out as a poetic mystery imbued with the style of film noir. The film noir era of the 1940's and 1950's had many characteristics, including dream-like, strange, erotic, ambivalent, and cruel. With that stylish thriller language of Chandler and Hammett, Earth and Sky captures all in its twists and turns that will keep audiences entertainingly on the edge of their seats.
Earth and Sky opens with would-be poet and part-time librarian Sara McKeon (Sara Joy Lebowitz) on a phone call with her new lover David Ames (Chris Tully) not knowing that it would be her last conversation with him as he is found dead in an alley. Detectives Weber (Kurt Riggs) and Kersnowski (Michael Sigler) suspect that he may have been involved in illicit activities including kidnapping, rape and murder. Unable to believe that the man she gave her heart to was a killer, and outraged that the police seem to have closed the book on the case, Sara begins her own investigation of the crime and is led deeper and deeper through the urban labyrinth into the contemporary underworld. As the detective story moves forward in time, scenes from the love affair take us back to the moment when Sara and David first met. Finally the plots converge, and Sara finds herself face to face with the person who murdered her beloved. Audiences will be talking about Earth and Sky well after the final blackout.
The cast also features Andy De, Juliana Ejedoghaobi, Marc Rehr, Vanessa Terzaghi and David Dieudonne. The production team includes Stacey Kruml (Assistant Director), Alika Codispoti (Stage Manager), Bob Benn (Set Design), Stephen Deming (Lighting Design), Roger Stone (Sound Design), Sonya Okin (Props Design), Harlene Leahy (Costume Design), and Steve Leshin (Master Carpenter).
