Farce is defined as a comedy which aims to entertain the audience by means of unlikely, extravagant, and improbable situations. Well, nothing could be more unlikely and improbable than a group of middle-aged British ladies trying to produce one of Shakespeare's most difficult tragedies. And audiences will be in stitches that they do. David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin, Jr. created the Farndale Avenue Ladies series starting with the Farndale Avenue Macbeth in 1975 at the Edinburgh Festival. Over the next 15 years, they went on to "desecrate" 9 other stories ranging from Dickens to Gilbert and Sullivan with doses of murder mystery, French farce and even science fiction in between. McGillivray wrote: "I think it's no accident that the Farndale Ladies, who can't seem to perform the simplest task without falling over or breaking something, were created in Great Britain, possibly the only country in the world which discourages personal achievement as vulgar and has made cult out of the heroic failure." The Ladies failure is the audience's triumph with side-splitting laughter.
The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society ladies mount yet another assault on the classics with a startlingly original production of Macbeth staged to get them to the Welwyn Garden City Finals. Under the carefully mascara'd eye of adjudicator George Peach (David Finn), producer Plummer (Sandy Irving) and stage manager Henry (David Dubov), the ladies Mrs. Reece (Diane Wurzer), Thelma (Alyssa Sanders), Minnie (Ana Marie Multchler), Dawn (Malinda Smith), Felicity (Jessie Dulaney), Kate (Mattie Cohan) and Gwynneth (Audrey White) embody Shakespeare's line "fair is foul and foul is fair" as all events conspire hilariously against them.
The production team includes Christie Walser (Assistant Producer), Pam Burks (Stage Manager), Jamie Coupar (Sound Design), Peter Caress (Light Design), Mary Dalto (Props) and Nicole Jaja (Master Carpenter).
The Stage's 2010-2011 season continues with the artful Three Days of Rain (May 13-Jun. 4) and exciting One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Jun. 24-July 23).
