Silver Spring Stage announces a new series, Project Underground, dedicated to challenging and provocative contemporary plays. Project Underground offers Beltway and regional audiences exciting and stimulating works rarely performed by community theaters in high quality, affordable productions. The series debuts with two plays: Blackbird by David Harrower (opening this week) and Three Days of Rain by Richard Greenberg. Silver Spring Stage is offering a special series price of $30 for both plays.
Silver Spring Stage is located in the Woodmoor Shopping Center (next to the CVS), lower level, at Colesville Road and University Boulevard. The Project Underground series can be purchased at www.ssstage.org. Information is also available by calling (301) 593-6036.
Silver Spring Stage, in its 42 years, has acquired a reputation for presenting thought-provoking and rarely produced plays, often community theater premieres. In recent years, Silver Spring Stage has produced I Am A Man about the 1968 Memphis garbage workers strike; a stirring metaphor of AIDS in Marvin's Room; Coyote on a Fence, a searing examination of the death penalty; Never the Sinner about the Leopold and Loeb murder case; the Pulitzer Prize winning Wit, a woman's struggle with cancer; columbinus about the Columbine High School shooting; and Edward Albee's controversial love story The Goat or, Who is Sylvia? Project Underground builds on this record of award-winning productions with new stimulating works for the head and the heart.
Project Underground launches with two distinguished plays. Blackbird by David Harrower is a tale about the cost of temptation and redemption in which two people who once had an inappropriate affair meet again, fifteen years later, to face the truth and the consequences of their past indiscretion. Three Days of Rain by Richard Greenberg depicts the chain reaction that follows for a brother and sister when the reading of his will reveals the mysterious origins of their father's relationships, and, transported back in time, audiences discover that the present mirrors the past. Both plays expose disturbing truths with brilliant writing, vivid characters and powerful situations.
Blackbird runs weekends January 7 to 29 and Three Days of Rain runs weekends May 13 to June 4. Series patrons get the benefit of discounted box office prices, seat selection and unlimited exchanges. With Project Underground, Silver Spring Stage is proud to offer a thrilling opportunity for audiences to dig a little deeper with contemporary works that upend traditional conventions, pose provocative ideas and present new theatrical experiences.
