For the tenth anniversary production of The Sarah Play, Round House Theatre is proud to present a stage adaptation of Lois Lowry's novel The Giver by Eric Coble. Directed by Bethesda Chevy Chase High School student Jessie Klueter, The Giver runs at Round House Theatre Silver Spring from March 23 – April 1, 2012.
The Sarah Metzger Memorial Play is the country's only theatrical production, offered as part of a regional theatre's regular programming, that is directed, designed, stage managed, and performed entirely by high school students. Each year, it provides students from across the D.C. region the resources and guidance to mount a theatrical production at Round House under the mentorship of professional theatre artists and practitioners. Round House covers all related finances, allows access to equipment and supplies, and provides support in the areas of marketing and public relations.
The Sarah Play honors the memory of Sarah Emily Metzger, an active member of the theatre community in her school and at Round House, who was killed in an automobile accident during her freshman year of college. One of the Round House family's enduring memories of Sarah is that, while still a high school student, she independently mounted a full-scale theatre production. Wishing to expand on the opportunities offered by her high school's theatre department, she raised funds, secured facilities and a production staff, marketed and promoted her production, and directed a full-length play. After her passing, Sarah's family worked with Round House to create The Sarah Metzger Memorial Fund as a tribute to the inspiring young woman.
Through the generosity of many contributors, the fund provides the resources each season to expose similarly passionate and motivated high school students to the process of creating a theatrical production in a professional setting. "Inspired by Sarah's memory, our goal is to give young people a place to realize their creative potential by taking on a project and seeing it through to completion. It's important to realize that this is their work and vision from conception through performance. Seeing their finished product is inspiring and moving. Sarah would be proud," says Round House Theatre Associate Artistic Director Danisha Crosby.
The Sarah Play is made possible in part by The Sarah Metzger Memorial Fund, Jeffrey and Carolyn Leonard, The William S. Abell Foundation, and The Community Fund for the National Capital Region.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Washington, DC – Silver Spring is the official hotel sponsor of the 2012 Sarah Play.
