Rep Stage, the regional theatre in residence at Howard Community College (HCC), continues its 23rd season with "Antigone Project: A Play in 5 Parts," conceived by Chiori Miyagawa and Sabrina Peck and written by Karen Hartman, Tanya Barfield, Caridad Svich, Lynn Nottage and Chiori Miyagawa. It is directed by Joseph W. Ritsch, Rep Stage's co-producing artistic director. Five award-winning female playwrights bring five very different explorations of Sophocles' tragedy to life. "Antigone Project: a Play in 5 Parts" reconsiders this classic story from a variety of rich and radical perspectives of race, class and gender. With such settings as World War I, a modern African Village and the underworld of Hades, we see a sister's love and devotion through many lenses in a work that The New York Times lauded as "engaging, seductive and wildly divergent."
"Antigone Project" opens February 17, 2016, with a limited run through March 6 in the Studio Theatre of the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA) on the campus of HCC. For tickets and additional information, visit www.repstage.org or call the box office at 443-518-1500. The press performance is Friday, February 19 at 8 p.m. For press reservations, contact Zheyan Damavandi in the Rep Stage office at 443-518-1510 or email zdamavandi@howardcc.edu.
The Women's Project & Productions first produced "The Antigone Project: A Play in 5 Parts," in association with Crossing Jamaica Avenue, to mark the inaugural season of Loretta Greco as its producing artistic director. The 70-minute play premiered October 13, 2004, at The Julia Miles Theater in New York. Calling the production a "groundbreaking collaboration," Women's Project & Productions' original production notes also describe the play as the following: "From an imagined Antigone Museum, to a princess of privilege courted by a surfer, these playwrights take on the state of our world from the perspective of an individual woman confronting authority."
