Red Branch Theatre Company (RBTC) will kick off its 2016 season entitled Paint It Red with the TONY Award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Casting has just been completed for the season opening performance at Howard County's newest professional theatre. The production will run at Drama Learning Center, where Red Branch is the theatre in residence, from April 8 - 23, 2016. Related interactive experiences, talkbacks, and other special events are in the process of being solidified.
Set in 19th century London, Sweeney Todd is the epic musical adaptation of the 1973 play by Christopher Bond. Adapted by Stephen Sondheim (music & lyrics) and Hugh Wheeler (book), Sweeney Todd won eight TONY Awards (including Best Musical, Book, and Original Score) when it premiered on Broadway in 1979. Following 557 performances on Broadway, the piece has lived on through several National and International tours, as well as regional performances. Other productions in Red Branch's 2016 season include the area premiere of Heathers the Musical, Evil Dead the Musical, and Harry Connick, Jr.'s The Happy Elf.
On directing the production, Walter Ware III states: "the opportunity to direct Sondheim's Sweeney is one I have been looking forward to ever since I first heard the soundtrack. The thrilling aesthetic, disturbing story, and infectious music are a director's dream. As Sondheim said 'Sweeney is a movie for the stage.' This cinematic quality regarding this beloved horror musical is what I believe keeps an audience begging to put their throats at risk again and again." Mr. Ware also serves as Casting Director for Signature Theatre in Virginia.
Sweeney Todd is presented with permission through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Red Branch Theatre Company's production is made possible in part through the generous support of title sponsor Howard County Economic Development Authority.
