Quotidian Theatre Company starts 2018 off right with the antidote to winter's cold: the heartwarming romantic comedy Hobson's Choice opening right around Valentine's Day.
In this hilarious comedy of turn-of-the-century Lancashire manners, curmudgeonly cobbler Henry Hobson (Andy White) faces the ultimate choice: take a life with three daughters and keep them in his shop forever unmarried (and save staff wages and dowry money), or let them wed their sweethearts and leave him all alone (with no business). Eldest daughter Maggie (Rebecca Ellis) has a plan to thread the bootmaking needle and she has inherited her father's strong will to make it happen! QTC presents this slice-of-life play that the Guardian says "has shades of King Lear and Taming of the Shrew as well-made and comfortable as a stout pair of boots."
"This play is one that does not get nearly enough recognition," says David Dubov, the play's director. "Brighouse wrote a classic that was a radical departure from the mannered and often melodramatic plays of the Victorian era. A portrayal of middle-class, working people - especially women - speaking in their northern accents was something not seen on British stages before. And, it was a smashing success. I'm excited to bring this piece to life with a supremely talented cast and show why it has lasted and is still relevant to today's audiences."The mission at Quotidian Theatre Company is to find truth and beauty in the everyday, presenting plays in an understated, impressionistic style. We are proud to be the Resident Theater Company at our performance space, The Writer's Center in Bethesda.
