The three week WORLD STAGES: International Theater Festival 2014 besides presenting wonderful performances, also has a variety of wonderful installations throughout the Kennedy Center during the Festival which runs until March 30, 2014. All of these are FREE.
From the Pequeno Teatro (Little Theaer) of Brazil are puppets created by Rosa Magalhaes. Visitors can look inside a miniature four-walled "theater" to experience puppets from Shakespeare to Pirandello to Moliere to Sondheim (who holds a WEST SIDE STORY Playbill amongst Anita and dancers. A touring installation from the Victoria and Albert Museum of London is "Five Truths". This is an immersive video installation blending theater and techology. There are five short films playing simultaneously across ten screens of different sizes on a ten-minute loop. The topic is a scene from HAMLET, Act IV, Scenes V and VII. It is directed and divised by Katie Mitchell.
For lovers of costumes, don't miss "5X6: Costume Designs for the American Theater" which showcases sketches from six distinguished, award-winning American designers. From Susan Hilferty: Sketches for WICKED, Geoffrey Holder: THE WIZ, Willa Kim: THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES, William Ivey Long: CINDERELLA, Clint Ramos: THE GOOD PERSON OF SZECHWAN, and finally, Julie Taymor: THE LION KING. Finally, there is "Raw to Real: Carving Theater" from the Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa. You will find a special selection of puppets from some of their most popular shows. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up and close and see their incredible depiction of the horse "Joey" from their acclaimed production of WAR HORSE. (See photos).
