March is Youth Art Month and HCAC is celebrating with the annual spring exhibit of student artwork in Gallery I at the Howard County Center for the Arts. Presented through an ongoing partnership between Howard County Public School System and Howard County Arts Council, this year’s Youth Art Month exhibit is titled Papercraft: Design and Art with Paper and features hundreds of works by HCPSS students grades K-12. In Gallery II, in partnership with Howard County Recreation and Parks’ Therapeutic Recreation, work by youth and adult artists with developmental disabilities is on display in the exhibit No Boundaries. Both exhibits will be open from March 9 to April 20, 2012. A free public reception including beverages and snacks, and HCAC’s Summer Arts Camp Preview will be held on Friday, March 16, from 5-7 pm.
Papercraft: Design and Art with Paper will fill Gallery I with artwork chosen from public school art classes across the county reflecting the title theme. The work will explore the myriad and sometimes surprising ways paper can be used in art-making.
No Boundaries exhibits work created in the Exploring Art and Focus on Art programs in Howard County Recreation and Parks Therapeutic Recreation division. In these programs, youth and adults with developmental disabilities can explore a variety of media, styles, and methods of creating art.
At the reception for the exhibits on March 16, the Howard County Arts Council will present the Summer Arts Camp Preview. A sampling of teachers from HCAC’s Visual and Performing Arts Summer Camps will be on-hand leading example activities and there will be sample projects from previous camps. Staff will be on-site to accept summer camp registrations. HCAC Summer Camps run June through August 2012 and offer visual and performing arts classes for students in grades K-7 (entering Fall 2012).
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10AM - 8PM, Saturday 10AM - 4PM, and Sunday 12 - 4PM. The Center is closed Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012. To learn more about HCAC programs and exhibits, call 410-313-ARTS(2787) or visit www.hocoarts.org.
