Everyman Theatre has announced its 2016-2017 season. Hot off its 25th anniversary season that garnered record breaking box office success and the largest annual attendance in company history, Everyman brings its aesthetic for quality storytelling which its audiences have grown to love to three exciting new plays this season- the hilarious and poignant Dot by Colman Domingo, Jen Silverman's hysterical play The Roommate, and for the first time in Everyman's history, the theatre is commissioning a re-imagining of Tony Award nominees Michael John LaChiusa and Ellen Fitzhugh, new musical entitled Los Otros.
The company will also produce three theatrical classics- a riveting adaptation of the Charles Dickens' masterpiece Great Expectations by Gale Childs Daly, the thriller Wait Until Dark written by Frederick Knott and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, and the quintessential backstage comedy Noises Off by Michael Frayn.
"We spent a lot of time this past season honoring the last 25 years and celebrating our achievements, but now, as we look forward to the next 50 years, I am filled with anticipation and excitement for what is to come." said Founding Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi. "This new season is about the thrill of discovery. It's about laughter, new works, and new ventures while still showcasing our Resident Company of actors and the great stories audiences have come to love and expect from us. We have a thriller, three comedies, a musical, and a rarely seen stage adaptation of a classic novel. We can't wait to welcome you back for our 26th season!"
"Next season builds on the incredible success of our 25th anniversary season, where we saw the launch of inspiring new initiatives including a new, sold out play reading series, a new community engagement initiative, myriad pre and post show events designed to enrich the theatre-going experience for patrons, and the addition of Artistic Associate Johanna Gruenhut and 3 new full-time staff members," said Managing Director Jonathan K. Waller. "Thanks to our loyal audience, Everyman continues to grow and each year we try to bring the benefits of that growth back to our community in new and interesting ways."
The season will open with Wait Until Dark by Frederick Knott and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from September 7, 2016 through October 9, 2016. Murder, secret identities, and a switchblade named Geraldine make up this gripping, white-knuckle thriller that will have you sleeping with the lights on. Suzy, a blind woman from Greenwich Village, gets tangled up with a sinister con man and a battle of wits ensues. Light becomes darkness and the tables are turned in a deadly game of cat and mouse. TheatreMania calls it "a roller-coaster ride, one that leaves the audience giddy from terror."
Next up is the Baltimore/Washington DC premiere of Jen Silverman's The Roommate, a hilarious coming-of-age story of a middle-aged woman that took the Humana Festival by storm. This heartwarming mash-up of Thelma and Louise meets The Odd Couple, will run from October 26, 2016 through November 27, 2016. Susan, a lonely Iowa divorcee, seeks a roommate and a change of pace in her quiet life. Enter Robyn, a mysterious vegan transplant from the Bronx who's secret past threatens to ignite Susan's small world. Both women's mismatched personalities and hidden talents erupt with hilarious, moving, and inadvertent consequences. Destination Diaries calls it "a heartwarming reminder that it is never too late to completely reconstruct every facet of our lives that we wish to change."
For the holiday season Everyman presents Dot, a new play from playwright/actor Colman Domingo (Wild With Happy/star of Fear the Walking Dead). This uproariously funny and touching look at shifting family dynamics hot off its Off-Broadway run is directed by Everyman Theatre's Founding Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi in its Baltimore/DC premiere running from December 7, 2016 through January 8, 2017. Dotty and her three adult children are home for the holidays in their West Philly community, but this year there is more than presents and yuletide on their mind. Dotty fights to maintain a grasp on her fading memory, while her kids wrestle with the challenge of caring for their aging parent. Brother and sister collide in a riotous and raw familial brawl where losing your mind and losing your sanity are two different things.
In the winter of 2017, Charles Dickens' Great Expectations comes bursting to life in a dynamic adaptation where only six actors portray over 35 characters in a stylized and fast-paced world sure to leave audiences gasping for breath. Pip, a poor orphan child in Nineteenth-century England, is mysteriously plucked from obscurity by the wealthy and decaying Miss Havisham, changing his life forever. The Chicago Tribune says "Daly's exceptional new adaptation is tight and suspenseful. It's a riveting cutting and shaping that is never dull for a moment; the stakes are thrillingly high throughout." The production will open on February 1, 2017 and run through March 5, 2017.
Everyman Theatre is thrilled to announce a new musical, Los Otros, running from March 22, 2017 to April 23, 2017. From Tony Award nominees Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party/Giant) and Ellen Fitzhugh (Grind/Paradise Found), and acclaimed director Noah Himmelstein (An Inspector Calls/I Am Harvey Milk) comes the premiere of this newly re- imagined version of an unusual kind of musical. Lillian and Carlos, two Californians, one white and one Latino, find their lives linked in unexpected ways. Told through three significant moments in their lives, a beautiful and intimate score captures the richness of each decade as they rise to face the preconceptions of what it means to be "The Other."
Noises Off, the side-splitting farce to end all farces by playwright Michael Frayn, will close the season. Come see Everyman's Resident Company of actors perform as a British company of actors in this boisterous love letter to the thrilling and unpredictable nature of the stage-both in front of the footlights and behind the curtain, sure to leave you rolling in the aisles as everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. The production will be directed by Founding Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi and will feature nearly the entire Resident Company. Noises Off will take place May 17, 2017 till June 18, 2017.
Subscriptions are now available for the 2016/17 season. Current subscribers must renew their subscriptions through June 1, 2016 to keep their seats. New subscription orders will be accepted starting June 15, 2016.
