Under the direction of Elizabeth van den Berg, associate professor and chair of McDaniel's Theatre Arts department, Henrik Ibsen's classic drama is brought to life on stage with a cast of exceptional student actors. In this Frank McGuinness adaptation, Nora Helmer, wife to Torvald and mother of three children, appears to enjoy living the life of a pampered child. But as her economic dependence becomes brutally clear, Nora's acceptance of the status quo undergoes a profound change.

"The play's characters are fairly ordinary, middle-class people, and the play begins with fairly mundane events in their lives - Nora's return home from shopping, discussions of Torvald's work, visits from old friends," van den Berg said. "But McGuinness crafts remarkable tension through symbolism, foreshadowing events, and the seemingly villainous character of Krogstad turns out to be the good guy, while Torvald ends up being responsible for Nora's decision to abandon her family - a shocking end."

McGuinness' adaptation received its London premiere in October 1996 and opened on Broadway in 1997, where the production won four Tony Awards.
