Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) presents the final play in its 17th Mainstage season, the award winning drama, "Good People". Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, and directed by MET Artistic Director Tad Janes, the play will run at MET for four weeks beginning tonight, May 29.
"Good People" takes place in Southie, a Boston neighborhood where a night on the town means a few rounds of bingo, where this month's paycheck covers last month's bills, and where Margie Walsh has just been let go from yet another job. Facing eviction and scrambling to catch a break, Margie thinks an old fling who made it out of Southie might be her ticket to a fresh start. Is this apparently self-made man secure enough to face his humble beginnings? Margie is about to risk what little she has left to find out. With his signature humorous glow, Lindsay-Abaire explores the struggles, shifting loyalties and unshakeable hopes that come with having next to nothing in America.
David Lindsay-Abaire is an American playwright, lyricist, and screenwriter who studied at the Juilliard School. In 2007 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play "Rabbit Hole". "Good People" made its Broadway debut in 2011 and went on to win the New York Drama Critics', Drama Desk, and Outer Critics' Circle Awards. His other works include "Fuddy Meers", "Wonder of the World", "A Devil Inside", the book and lyrics for "Shrek the Musical" and the book for the musical "High Fidelity".
MET Artistic Director
Tad Janes will direct Maryland Ensemble Theatre's production of "Good People". Janes hopes this show will open the audience to a new perspective on the perception of American social classes. "The play presents a very honest look at class struggle in America," said Janes. "It tackles issues such as living paycheck-to-paycheck, single parenting, and how to rise to a more stable lifestyle. It also raises questions of what one is willing to do to achieve high social status, and how those that succeed are treated. There's also a good dose of humor that comes out of these strikingly honest moments."
Janes will direct a talented veteran cast comprised of DC Cathro,
Kevin Cole, Gené Fouché,
Julie Herber,
Rona Mensah and
Lia Seltzer. The production will benefit from a terrifically creative design team of
Jeanine Evans (properties), Doug Grove (lights), Lee Hebb (costumes),
Thom Huenger (sound), and Milee McDonald (set).
"Good People" will run every Thursday through Sunday from May 29 to June 21 at MET, located in the historic FSK Hotel at 31 W Patrick Street in downtown Frederick, MD. Thursday, May 28 there will be a preview performance at 8pm and tickets to that show are $10 (cash only at door/no reservations). The first Sunday performance will be preceded by a reception hosted by MET Board Members Jack Topchik and Judy Rice and sponsored by Giant Eagle.
