Yoni Gras, a weekend of music featuring some of Frederick's finest local bands, is returning to Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) for the second straight summer. Silent Old Mtns, and Old Indian who played the inaugural Yoni Gras in July of 2011 will be joined by newcomers to the festival, Lucas and the Lovelys, Violet Overnight, Honeyhound, and Adrienne and the Merrylanders. Yoni Gras will take place on Friday and Saturday at 9pm on the weekend of June 15 at MET, located in the historic FSK Hotel at 31 W Patrick Street. Doors open at 8:30pm and tickets are just $5 or $7 for both nights. Beer and wine is available but the show itself is open to all ages.
The show is being organized by Thom Huenger a member of Silent Old Mtns. who recently served as house band for MET's mainstage production of The All New Grand Ole Hee Haw Hootenanny Hoedown Jamboree. The band who describes their genre as "downtown dirty folk" also recently completed a successful Kickstarter fundraising campaign for $5,000 to buy a van to tour in support of their upcoming debut album "Velvet Raccoon". Silent Old Mtns. will play on Friday along with Lucas and the Lovelys and Old Indian. Lucas and the Lovelys blend their own unique musical backgrounds, echoing the sounds of blues, rockabilly, folk, alt-country, and Americana--all with multi-part harmonies. They released their first CD in January 2011. Old Indian, a blues band inspired by artists such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf rounds out the Friday night line-up
Saturday's line-up features the relatively newly formed bands Violent Overnight, and a bluesy, folksy, indie rock band from Frederick called Honeyhound. Saturday night's show will also feature the fantastic Adrienne & the Merrylanders.
In Hinduism, Yoni is a symbol of divine procreative energy so who knows where the evenings may lead but if good people having a good time enjoying great local music sounds like fun to you, then you might want to stop by MET next weekend.
