MAKE HERstory To Play Simple Wellness October 25-26

Remember when you were younger and optimism ruled your world. You were fearless, unafraid to try new things, because well, everything was new. Limitations were unthought-of. You floated in optimism. You were secure even in uncertainty. Then SOMETHING happened. Did you have to change to survive? What did you change? What did you hold on to? Why did you hold on to it? And how does it serve you now? This is OURstory.

"MAKE HERstory: A Work in Progress," the one woman show written and performed by Alisa L. Brock, Directed by Kevin Jiggetts, and accompanied by Djembe player Menes Yahudah is the story of Maggie. A courageous, highly sensitive and optimistic 7 year old self made child artist who uses her imagination to survive aban­donment and abuse in her household. It is also the story of her adult self Margret, a 29 year old out of work actress and writer (with an Imagination that is still well at work on and off stage) who is cur­rently embarking on a journey of self acceptance and self love. As Maggie and Margret tag team in telling you HERstory we are intro­duced to a variety of characters that activate and strengthen her hu­man resilience. It is a tale of perpetuating abuse, freedom, forgiveness and the growth of "the black sheep heroine." It is reality's laughter, a GUMBO of true stories that never had the chance to be told - until now.

Brock is an Award winning actor/writer/producer originally from New Orleans, La. She has performed in numerous productions including, "The Face of Emmett Till / Shaking the Mess Out of Mis­ery / The Dance on Widows Row / Gone / In the Middle / and "The Trial of One Shortsighted Black Woman vs. Mammy Louise and Sa­freeta Mae." "The Trail...." went on to receive accolades at the Na­tional Association of Speech and Dramatic Arts conference in Dallas Texas. Brock has done work on Season Five of the HBO series "The Wire", the film "Jamesy Boy" and Center Stage's Production of "An Enemy of the People". "HERstory" has appeared at the Eubie Blake National Jazz and Cultural Center, The DC Black Theatre Festival, The Bun Shop, and The 14 Karat Cabaret. After a string of successful productions and accolades, Brock teams up with Director Kevin Jig­getts, and they are setting the road ahead ablaze.

Award winning and critically acclaimed actor/director/writer and twenty-two year veteran of the industry Kevin Jiggetts takes this show head on. His resume reflects numerous theatre productions, both local and abroad, to include, and most recently: Stick Fly/ Everyman Theatre, The Exonerated / Everyman Theatre, Rounding Third / Blackbox Theater, Gem of the Ocean / Everyman Theatre, Joe Turner's Come and Gone / Kennedy Center, Wedding Dance / The Kennedy Center, Fences / Everyman Theatre, Leaving The Summer Land / Theatre J, Anna Lucasta / Rep Stage, Tripping Through The Car House / Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Creoles / John Jay Theatre (NY), Split Second / Musical Theatre Works (NY), The Meeting (National Tour), Man, Woman, Dinosaur / Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Spunk / The MET, Voices in the Darkness / Takoma Stage, Cages / Duality Playhouse (NY), The Blue Hour / Silver Spring Stage to name a few. He is excited to have part in such a moving, dynamic and necessary work of art.
